ENGL132A: Paper #3 Assignment - Environmental Assessment Essay
Draft Due: by 9 a.m. in electronic form, sent to wkupinse@ups.edu
Length: 5-6 pages, plus Works Cited
Special
Requirements: ● as always, build essay upon a thesis; in this case your thesis
should be a recommendation for action/policy changes
● employ a minimum three non-internet sources that you did not
use for a previous paper
● include a Works Cited Section – even for the draft
● email as MS Word attachment
Final Version Due: by noon, Friday, April 16 (please include your first draft,
all peer reviews, the comments from your presentation,
and one copy of the final version)
Once you’ve completed your presentation and received feedback from me and from the class, you’ll revise your oral report notes and/or script into a 5-6 page paper. This paper should follow the format of previous papers in this course: it should have a thesis (in this case, a policy recommendation), it should make use of library research (here, you’ll likely want to lean more on scientific texts and government reports, not to mention position papers from non-profit and industry-supported groups), and it should engage in thoughtful analysis.
Your paper will be likely to be most effective if it includes the three components I asked you to address during your oral presentation:
1) Establishing Your Locale and Defining Important Concepts
2) Assessing Your Area’s Current Environmental Status
3) Offering Recommendations for Action.
See the presentation guidelines handout or look at the copy posted on the web at http://www.ups.edu/faculty/wkupinse/Engl132SP04PresInst.htm if you have questions about these three components.
One thing that you’ll want to pay particular attention to in this paper is anticipating and answering counter-arguments. For example, if your recommendation is that industry should stop polluting Commencement Bay, how would you answer the claim of corporations that jobs must come first? (This is a simplification, but you get the point). The feedback from class will be invaluable to this step.
We’ll then follow peer review procedure we set up for Paper #2, the only difference being that we’ll post drafts on the web instead of printing them out; you’ll workshop the drafts and exchange written comments Monday, April 5, and you’ll submit a final revision of your paper to me for a grade by noon on Friday, April 16.
As always, I’ll be glad to meet with you during office hours or by appointment to answer any questions you may have; you may also contact me via email.
