ECOLOGY OF THE TEXT: Collaborative Exercise for Wintergreen

Instructions:

Imagine that a federal court has ordered Weyerhauser and Crown Zellerbach each to pay $150,000 in reparations to three local environmental groups for logging and wilderness violations that the two companies committed in the Gray’s River area in the past.  Imagine also that your group (you may chose a name), has been selected as one of the three organizations that will receive a share of this $300,000.  The one stipulation is that you must use your $100,000 within one year for local environmental advocacy.

Each group will focus on one environmental issue: Group 1 – encouraging sustainable communities; Group 2 – preserving old-growth forest; Group 3 – protecting and reintroducing bears.

In our imaginary world, a newspaper ad and 60 second radio spot each costs $500 and a 30 second ad on a local TV station costs $1,000.  It costs $500 to develop a radio or newspaper ad and $3,000 for a TV ad.  Other costs (mailing, etc.) are what you’d expect.

What will your group’s specific message be?  What will the ads—radio, print, and/or TV look like?  (You should design an ad or two)  What will your media “mix” be?  And will you pursue any strategies other than the media ads listed above?
