Monstrous Genealogies:  Dwarves, Giants, and Heroes:

 

Compare "On Dwarves" with Beowulf and the Prologue to the TS:  Where do the genealogies agree, where do they differ?   What are the connotations of the differing views? Those familiar with the account of creation in the Codex Regius (Poetic Edda) are welcome to reference that depiction of giants, as well.

  Social Monstrosity and the Berserkers:   In Beowulf we saw how Grendel and his Mom helped to determine social and heroic values through their social enactments of monstrosity. (Night-stalking, invasion, feeding).  Analyze how berserkers signify the monstrous within the Mead Hall in the tale of Svipdag and how this relates to the external monstrous in Beowulf.
