The Dijon Program offers an exciting study alternative to pursue academic work in France during the spring semester. Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, is located 300 km. southeast of Paris. It is easily accessible, a mere hour and twenty minutes by the rapid train service, the TGV.
Dijon, with a population of about 150,000 and a climate similar to that of the Puget Sound's, is an ideal setting for studying abroad. Its rich historical heritage, cultural life, proximity to Paris and other European cities, add to its status as one of France's premier region in gastronomy and wine production. Students seriously interested in pursuing their French studies at the prestigious University of Burgundy and in homestays with French families are encouraged to apply.
The semester starts with an extended stay in Paris and is complemented with several excursions in Strasbourg to visit the site of the European Parliament, to Provence for some sunny days on the Mediterranean beaches, and to other ventures from the Loire valley chateaux to the beaches of Normandy.
The curriculum is based primarily on a placement exam which dictates the available options in each level. All students will take language and culture classes, a set of electives to choose from Art History, Philosophy, Gastronomy, Modern Literature, Business French, Music, Theatre, to French History, and will receive four (4) units of credit upon successful completion of the program. The semester runs from the beginning of February to the beginning of June with an Easter break of two weeks.
The program also offers many advantages beyond the cultural field trips and the flexible curriculum. Anne-Marie Choplain, the resident director in Dijon, organizes all the excursions, coordinates the homestay families, and is available to help in all matters. There are laptop computers for assignments and mountain bikes for leisurely rides. Visas, bus passes, and meals are included in the cost. All details will be reviewed during the weekly orientation sessions held after the students are formally accepted
into the program. In sum, the Dijon Semester offers an intellectual and cultural experience, a thorough preparation prior to departure, organized activities during the stay, and adequate support for all the essential expectations in France. All you need to bring with you is an open mind to experience the different culture on its own terms, a commitment to improve your oral and written fluency, and a self-initiative to explore all the available opportunities.
