Holodiscus discolor OCEAN-SPRAY Ocean-spray is an erect shrub to 4 m tall. The older, taller stems characteristically arch over, displaying plumes of tiny white to cream flowers. The leaves are alternate, deciduous, dull green, oval to triangular, and coarsely toothed to shallowly lobed. The flowers have 5 hypanthium lobes, 5 petals, 20 stamens, and 5 fused carpels. The flower clusters turn brown and remain hanging limply on the plants over winter. The fruits are tiny hairy achenes. Ocean-spray grows in dry to moist, open woods, thickets, and clearings at low to middle elevations. |
