Dwarf Oregon grape is a low shrub, under 50 cm tall, with several pinnately compound leaves arising from the short erect stem. The 9-11 leaflets are spiny-edged and glossy on both surfaces. The yellow flowers arise in dense racemes from the center of the plant. Dwarf Oregon grape is common in the understory of moist forests at low to middle elevations. It flowers March to June, depending on the elevation.
