Room Change Procedures

Students often inquire about switching rooms or having a different roommate before they have given their current situation a fair try.  Therefore, we have what's called a "freeze" period for the first two weeks of the semester to ensure that students at least attempt to make their assignment work. After that two week trial period, if students are still unhappy or uncomfortable with their living arrangements, they should follow the procedure outlined on these pages to receive a new room or roommate.

The student must first talk with a student staff person about their concerns.  As the staff person, you would want to ask things such as:

  • what makes you uncomfortable in your current situation?

  • have you tried talking with your roommate about your concerns?

  • what have you done to try to make this roommate situation work?

  • what are you hoping to find in a new roommate?

  • are your differences things that you can compromise on?

After assessing the situation with your supervisor, you may decide that an appointment for a room switch is necessary.  At this point, the resident needs to make an individual appointment with a member of the professional staff.  The student will then be required to complete a   ROOM CHANGE PROCESS/APPROVAL FORM.

The student and the involved staff members will receive copies of this form. The form is fairly self explanatory; however, it is crucial that the steps be completed as listed on the form.

Here are the steps:

  1. Student sets a check-out appointment with current staff person (determined by professional staff and student during meeting).

  2. RA/CC of current living assignment will receive student's RCR from Student Development to use during the check-out process.

  3. RA/CC of new living assignment will receive a blank RCR and new keys from professional staff.

  4. Student sets a check-in appointment with new RA/CC and must display a copy of the form to receive keys to new residence.

  5. Student must return old keys to RA/CC and receipt of keys must be recorded on form.

  6. Professional staff keep a copy of the form in Student Development.

ALL PAPERWORK FROM ROOM CHANGES MUST BE SUBMITTED TO A SUPERVISOR WITHIN 24 HOURS OF MOVE.
