Introduction:

A synonymic list of the New World Odonata was published as vol. 3(2) of Argia on 15 June 1991. Many nomenclatoral changes and synonymies have taken place since that list was published. This revised listing of the synonymic list (hereafter referred to as NWOL) represents incorporations and changes up through January 2000 and is available on the world-wide web at: http://www.ups.edu/biology/museum/NewWorldOD.html. This NWOL represents a complete listing for all described Odonata of North, Middle, and South America. Generic synonyms and species misidentifications are not included. I have used the following sources:

Bridges, Charles A. 1994. Catalogue of the family-group, genus-group and species group names of the Odonata of the world (third edition). Privately published by the author (now deceased) [Note: The first and second editions of this work appeared on 15 June 1991 and 1 February 1993, respectively. The first edition was reviewed by Garrison in Argia: 1991, Vol. 3 No. 1: 23-24. The second and third editions incorporated corrections and additions brought to the author's attention. The third edition has a new section, Part XIII, which includes figures of wings of almost all genera of Odonata.]

In addition, various lists of Odonata for the Americas are included at various computer web sites and are updated at various intervals. However, none of these appear to list all published names from the literature.

This list reflects my own taxonomic views, and I have freely synonymized some species based on my own analyses. I have sent several versions of the list to the following Odonatists, who have freely given their advice, opinions, and constructive criticisms: J. Belle (The Netherlands), G. Bick (Florida), C. Cook (Kentucky), J. Daigle (Florida), J. De Marmels (Venezuela), T. Donnelly (New York), S. Dunkle (Texas), A. Machado (Brazil), P. Machet (France), K. Tennessen (Alabama), S. Tsuda (Japan), J. van Tol (The Netherlands).

I have not always followed the advice of all of my colleagues regarding the establishment of certain genera or author citations, and those errors that remain are mine. I have tried to be thorough in establishing correct authorship for each taxon, and I hope that those discovered errors will be addressed to me.

I have not always been successful in being consistent pertaining to discussions of synonymy. For example, I am not in favor of recognizing most subspecies; but upon advice from Dr. A.B.M. Machado of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, I have retained many within the genus Mecistogaster. On the other hand, I have synonymized all of Schmidt's subspecific names under Microstigma, because most Odonatists do not seem to use them. Similarly, I have synonymized the various subspecies of Calopteryx aequabilis, because they do not seem to be well defined; but I have retained the status quo for subspecies of Remartinia luteipennis and Staurophlebia reticulata, because I have not decided upon their status due to limited knowledge and/or specimens.

Similar problems have confronted me for correct dates and authorship of various taxa. The Hagen/Se1ys authorship controversy has been particularly troublesome; and I have decided on status by examining each original description by these two authors. Philippe Machet, of Saint-Cloud, France, has been particularly helpful in providing correct dates for certain poorly known published taxa described by Blanchard and others. Both he and Dr. Jurg De Marmels of Maracay, Venezuela have also been most helpful in providing correct endings for various species names.

The sequence and use of family names is largely traditional and is based primarily on Fraser (1957. A reclassification of the Order Odonata. Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales # 12, 133pp). Phylogenetic studies will alter the classification considerably. Such a new classification, including drastic changes in the higher classification has recently been proposed by Bechly (1996. Morphologische Untersuchungen am Flügelgeäder der rezenten Libeeen und deren Stammgruppenvertreter (insecta; Pterygota; Odonata. Petalura). Petalura). An abstracted English version (The phylogenetic system of fossil and recent Odonatoptera).is available at the following web site: http://members.aol.com/odonatadat/phylogeny/bechly.htm

The sequence of families is my own. I do not recognize the family Rimanellidae of Davies and Tobin. Species are listed alphabetically under genera, as are synonyms. Taxa treated as synonyms are listed as they were originally cited. Thus limbata Se1ys, 1853 was originally described as Hetaerina tricolor race limbata; therefore, its entry is: syn tricolor race limbata Se1ys, 1853. Some synonyms with a question mark before the name (e.g., ?maxima McLachlan, 1879) I consider probable synonyms.

This copy is derived from a DBXL file (compatible with DBASE) through Word 2000 for Windows 98, and can be edited at any time. I add new taxa as I discover them in the literature.

The abbreviations and letter fonts are defined as follows:

UPPER CASE BOLDFACED = ORDER, FAMILY
Boldfaced = Genus
Boldfaced Italics = species and subspecies
Italics = synonyms, homonyms
[Taxon] = genus in which species was originally described
(Author, date) = species transferred from original genus
?species = synonymic status uncertain

Following the list, I provide annotations for several taxa. Because certain nomenclatoral changes introduced here are based on information from others (usually by letter), or on my own unpublished opinion, this list should not be considered a publication. I particularly hope that the list will prove helpful to others, especially in solving several vexing problems which remain.

I owe much appreciation to the late Mr. Charles Bridges, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who corresponded with me over the years regarding the status of many New World Odonata name changes; he provided me with much help during the evolution of this list. To Don Frack of Covina, California, I owe a special debt. He provided me with a DBASE program, TAXON, which made the present list possible. My wife, Jo, who has always helped me over the years, helped with the data input.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who finds errors, and I also solicit reprints and/or correspondence from anyone who is interested in New World Odonata.

Annotations and comments

General Comments:

1. Date of publication of Hagen and Se1ys, Monographie des Gomphines: I follow Calvert (1905. Biologia Centrali Americana: 148), who states in a footnote: "It is usual to quote the "Monographie des Gomphines" with the date 1857, as is done by Kirby [1890] for example, and "November 1857" is, indeed, that which appears on the title page of the volume; but the original paper cover bore the date "Mai 1858," which has usually not been preserved in bound copies. Moreover, plates xx-xxii are dated at the bottom as having been drawn in 1858." Cowley (1937. J. Soc. Bibliography Nat. Hist. 1(3):73-74) opted for 1857, but further evidence of an 1858 publication date was brought to my attention by P. Machet. In the "appendice" (page 651 [391 separate]) is stated: "Some circumstances having put off the conclusions of this volume, considerable and rather numerous materials have reached us during printing [italics mine]. One comes from a trip made by H. Hagen to London in 1857; others from a shipment of species from Texas, made by the Smithsonian Institution."

2. Date of publication of Schmidt's Odonata nebst Bernerkungen uber die Anomisma und Chalcopteryx des Amazonas-Gebiets. I follow Montgomery (1967. Acta Biol. Venez. 5(9):158), who states: "This paper was published in 1942 as 2: of the [currently accepted 1952 citation]. However, all but 6 copies were destroyed and the first printing is unlikely to be available to many readers." I therefore use 1952 for species introduced by Schmidt in this work.

3. I give synonyms, nomina nuda, etc., only for New World taxa for Holarctic species such as Enallagma cyathigerum and Libellula quadrimaculata. The single exception is Crocothemis servilia servilia, an Old World species recently introduced into peninsular Florida.

Specific Comments:

4. Euthore fasciata form fasciata (Hagen in Selys 1853) and Euthore fasciata form plagiata Selys, 1873 J. De Marmels (pers. comm.) has written that he cannot agree with Bick & Bick's assessment of fasciata and plagiata: he believes them subspecies.

5. Mnesarete. I am currently studying this genus, and Jurg De Marmels (in litt.) and I independently reached the conclusion that M. scintilla Racenis is a junior synonym of M. cupraea. Although Fraser (1946. Transactions of the Royal Entomological Society of London 96(2):28) suggested synonymy between Mnesarete hauxwelli and M. fulgida, I consider them distinct species for reasons I will describe in my upcoming paper.

6. Lestes falcifer. In my 1991 list, I suspected that L. urubamba was a synonym of L. falcifier. Dr. Javier Muzon and I, through examination of the types and exchange of illustrations, unquestionably believe these two species to be distinct.

7. Megapodagrion muzana Navás. In 1991, I stated that the poor description of the holotype female of Argia muzana may show that this species was really a Megapodagrion. Dr. Jurg De Marmels and I have since examined the holotype and we confirm that it is a Megapodagrion.

8. Paraphlebia. This genus is currently being revised by Dr. Enrique Gonzalez of Mexico, and my arrangement here should be considered tentative. Some new species await description. Authorship of Paraphlebia and P. zoe has generally been credited to Se1ys in Hagen, 1861; but neither the complete description of Paraphlebia ("Postcostal space furnished with two or three areoles; sectors numerous") nor of Paraphlebia zoe ("Apex of wings black") is adequately described, much less diagnosed, in Hagen 1861. 1 consider these two taxa nomina nuda until Se1ys adequately defined them both in 1862.

9. Mecistogaster buckleyi. Examination of the lectotype of M. garleppi convinces me that it is probably a junior synonym of this species.

10. Mecistogaster marchali var. selysia Navás has been examined by Machet, who informs me that it is a synonym of M. modesta.

11. Examination of the types of Protoneura peruviensis Fraser and P. protostictoides convinces me that both should be placed in the genus Epipleoneura. Further, I believe the type of protostictoides, by overall size, coloration, pattern, and penis morphology (the abdominal appendages are lacking) to be E. lamina.

12. Psaironeura bifurcata (Sjöstedt 1918) with syn. machadoi De Marmels, 1989. After examining the types of Protoneura bifurcata, a paratype of E. machadoi, and extensive series of Epipleoneura bifurcata, as well as examining many E. tenuissima (including a homotype), I believe that only two species with semicircular cerci exist: E. bifurcata and E. tenuissima.

13. Argia. The species listing of Argia is different from what has been offered in the past. The changes are based on studies I have made on the genus over the last several years. I have illustrated the caudal appendages of most South American species from the vast holdings at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Many decisions are based on examinations of homotypes and many reflect the opinion of Mrs. L.K. Gloyd, who had been working on the genus for over 50 years. There are still a few described species whose status is uncertain; but I hope to resolve these problems in the future. There are at least 20 species awaiting description, and I have no doubt that more will be found. I have recently been able to study almost all of the type material which Navás described in this genus. Most of his species I consider to be junior synonyms and these changes are reflected in this list. See point 16 below.

14. Acanthagrion leonardi, according to G. Jurzitza (in litt. 27 Feb. 1996) is a junior synonym of A. cuyabae Calvert which Leonard (1977) considered a junior synonym of A. lancea. Jurzitza and Javier Muzon consider A. cuyabae a distinct species. I have not studied specimens of either of these taxa, but will follow Jurzitza and Muzon and accord A. cuyabae specific rank.

15. Coenagrion minutissimum, according to P. Machet (in litt. 25 Oct. 1990) is probably a synonym of Homeoura nepos. The type of minutissimum should be examined to confirm this. It is extremely doubtful that any Coenagrion would occur in South America.

16. Argia hebdomatica Navás. Examination of the holotype male (Pensilvania, Colombia; in MNHP) shows it to be a Cyanallgma. The type lacks abdominal segments 7-10 but the penis morphology and large size are consistent with specimens identified by DeMarmels as C. tamaense DeMarmels 1988 in my collection. However, until further information on this genus from Colombia is forthcoming and upon the advice of DeMarmels (in litt.) I treat both species as valid.

17. AUSTROPETALIIDAE: In a recent paper, (1996. Revision of Austropetaliidae (Anisoptera: Aeshnoidea). Odonatologica 25(3): 231-259), F. Carle has revised the family, with the result that six new species, and four new genera, have been "described" as follows:

Rheopetalia (gen. nov.)

apicalis apicalis
apicalis decorata (stat. rev.)
rex (sp. nov.)

Odontopetalia (gen. nov.)

apollo

Eurypetalia (gen. nov.)

altarensis (sp. nov.)
excrescens (sp. nov.)

Ophiopetalia (gen. nov.)

araucana (sp. nov.)
auragaster (sp. nov.)
diana (sp. nov.)
pudu

All of these names (and other categorical names besides) are introduced as brief "descriptions" or "diagnoses" in a proposed phylogenetic key. There are no illustrations of pertinent characters nor is there a cladogram supporting the proposed phylogeny of this family. The "specific" differences elaborated by Carle for his new species seem minute and, in my opinion, represent an unjustified multiplication of names. Consequently, I will not accept them until an acceptable analysis of these dragonflies is performed justifying this splitting.

18. Aeshna clepsydra with synonyms arundinacea Se1ys 1872 and maxima Heikal in Hisinger 1861. The latter two names have often been included as synonyms of A. clepsydra. My reason for their deletion is based on a footnote by Walker to Muttkowski (1910. Cat. Odon.: 109):

"Walker in litteris Aug. 14, 1909: 'The synonyms given by you do not belong to the true clepsydra. A. arundinacea and maxima I have not seen: It is very probable that the first at least is a good species."' And, "Walker in litteris, Sept. 24, 1909: 'Some of the references ... do not refer to true clepsydra...I am quite sure arundinacea is not clepsydra, but as I have not seen the type it is probably best to let it stand as a synonym of the latter on the authority of Martin'."

Curiously, I can find no mention of these little-used names in Walker's 1912 monograph. The original description of arundinacea is based on a female from "Irkutzk", and Se1ys states it is similar to Siberian A. juncea. According to Dr. Matti Hämäläinen, University of Helsinki, in a letter to me, A. maxima is a junior synonym of the Old World Aeshna crenata Hagen. I have found no records of clepsydra occurring anywhere in the Palearctic, and I strongly suspect that arundinacea refers to a species other than the North American clepsydra.

19. Triacanthagyna obscuripennis Blanchard. Williamson, in his monograph of this genus (1923. Univ. Mich. Mus. Zool. Misc. Publ. 9:1-80), believed this to be a possible synonym of T. septima; but P. Machet believes, after examining the short description and figure by Blanchard, that it may be of the trifida group, and possibly a synonym of one of the later described species. Should this be the case (if the type is found), I would not be in favor of using this name, I list obscuripennis as a distinct species, but it should, in my opinion, be considered a nomen dubium or a nomen obletum, if and when its status is determined.

20. Gomphus complex. The status of the various genera/subgenera of North American entities has not been satisfactorily resolved. I have not studied the problems, but have largely followed the advice of others. In this list, I do not recognize the subgenus Stenogomphurus nor do I accept elevation of the subgenus Gomphurus to generic status since there appears to be questions of their validity and changes in the literature as follows: Carle (Carle, F. L. 1986. The classification, phylogeny and biogeography of the Gomphidae (Anisoptera). I. Classification. Odonatologica 15(3): 275-326.) proposed the subgenus Stenogomphurus (type species: Gomphus consanguis) under the large genus Gomphus. However, G. consanguis has always been included under the subgenus Gomphurus of Gomphus. Carle (1986) also raises Gomphurus to generic status, but does not key or diagnose between Gomphus and Gomphurus. He does not explain his reason for removing G. consanguis from Gomphus and placing it in the new subgenus, Stenogomphurus. It would appear that he never diagnosed Stenogomphurus from Gomphus. Carle (1986) does not discuss the relationship between Gomphurus and Gomphus sensu lato, and gives no reason for the elevation of Gomphurus to generic status. Therefore, I will continue to treat Gomphurus as a subgenus of Gomphus

Phanogomphus is also not recognized in this list for the following reason: Carle (Carle, F. L. 1986. The classification, phylogeny and biogeography of the Gomphidae (Anisoptera). I. Classification. Odonatologica 15(3): 275-326.) proposed the subgenus Phanogomphus (type species: Gomphus minutus Rambur), which Carle & May (Carle, F. L. & M. L. May. 1987. Gomphus (Phanogomphus) westfalli spec. nov. from the gulf coast of Florida (Anisoptera: Gomphidae). Odonatologica 16(1): 67-75) later expanded to include other species of Gomphus (Gomphus). Many Odonatists, including myself, consider Phanogomphus a subjective synonym of the type species of Gomphus, G. vulgatissimus (Linnaeus). I treat Arigomphus as a separate genus from Gomphus. Hylogomphus is considered a synonym of Gomphus (Gomphus), following Carle (1986). I realize that this arrangement will probably not be satisfactory to many, but a final resolution may not be achieved for several years.

Carle (in. May, M and F. Carle, 1996. An annotated list of the Odonata of New Jersey, with an appendix on nomenclature in the genus Gomphus. Bulletin of Odonatology 4(1):1-35) has defended his actions regarding the introduction of the names discussed above. That such an appendix was written and the acknowledgement that several workers were in doubt about the proper introduction of new taxa and changes illustrates, in my opinion, the continued confusion by this author's actions.
21. CORDULEGASTRIDAE: In a recent paper, 1992. Revision der Cordulegastridae. 1. Entwurfeiner neuen Klassifizierung der Familie (Odonata: Anisoptera). Opuscula Zoologica Fluminensia 96:1-18, H. Lohmann has performed a cladistic analysis on the family, with the result that our eight species are allocated to six genera as follows:

Archegaster (gen. nov.)

sayi

Kalyptogaster (gen. nov.)

erronea (with synonym fasciata)

Lauragaster (gen. nov.)

diadema
dorsalis

Pangaeagaster (gen. nov.)

maculata

Taeniogaster (Selys, 1854)

obliquua

Zoraena Kirby 1890

bilineata
diastatops

While I admire the treatment of this family by Lohmann, I do not think it serves science to split our American species from one into six genera. Carle, in an earlier paper (1983. Annals of the Entomological Society of America 76(1):61-68) also recognized Zoraena and Taeniogaster, but his divisions do not seem to have been followed by Odonatists in this country. I still consider all of our species in one genus, Cordulegaster. However, I include the above data for those who wish to make changes.

22. Carle (1995. Evolution, taxonomy, and biogeography of ancient Gondwanian Libelluloides, with comments on Anisopteroid evolution and phylogenetic systematics (Anisoptera: Libelluloidea). Odonatologica 24(4): 383-424) considers Gomphomacromia to be in its own family, Gomphomacromiidae. I follow traditional usage in retaining them under Corduliidae.

23. Both Dr. Ken Tennessen and Mr. Carl Cook inform me that Neurocordulia clara Muttkowski is more closely related to N. molesta, although Cook believes N. clara a good species. I have treated it as a synonym of N. molesta.

24. Ken Tennessen (in litt.) informs me that he believes Epitheca (Tetragoneuria) williamsoni Muttkowski to be a probable synonym of E. costalis.

25. Although the description of Dythemis kiautai was published in 1989 (De Marmels, Odonata ... Cerro de la Neblina, Acad. Cienc .... Nat., Caracas, p. 42), the manuscript was completed before Westfall (1988. Odonatologica 17(4):419-428) established Elasmothemis. Dythemis kiautai unquestionably belongs in Elasmothemis.

26. Erythrodiplax connata complex. I include some nomenclatoral changes which are not in accord with Borror 1942 (Ohio State Univ. Contr. Zool. Entomol., No. 4). Other Odonatists and I treat E. minuscula and E. fusca as separate species based on an absence of intergrades with E. connata (despite the fact that Borror reports such specimens in his monograph). Secondly, E. abjecta, E. cleopatra, and E. media may be synonyms of E. connata, as the diagnostic characters (primarily the absolute length of the penis) given by Borror do not seem convincing. However, Dennis Paulson, who is currently working on the connata complex, believes these three species to be distinct. Secondly, Paulson (pers. com.) believes that all E. connata from North and Central America may be distinct from the true E. connata whose type locality is Valparaiso, Chile, some 5000 miles south of the nearest populations of E. connata from Central America.

27. Erythrodiplax portoricana (Kolbe) was treated by Borror in his monograph (p. 137) as a probable synonym of an Antillean E. connata. Ris, in his monograph (1911. Libellulinen, p. 524), treated it as a synonym of E. minuscula. I believe it more likely to be a synonym of E. justiniana, because neither E. connata nor E. minuscula is known from Puerto Rico.

28. Erythrodiplax corallina. Dr. Gerhard Jurzitza has informed me (in litt.) that the description of Navás' Sympetrum medium unquestionably refers to E. corallina.

29. Philippe Machet (in litt.) believes that Nadiplax diversa Navás may actually be an Erythrodiplax, and possibly a synonym of a later described species.

30. In earlier versions of this list, I suggested that the description and figures of Ophippus garbei Navás showed this species to compare well with specimens of Gynothemis heteronycha Calvert. Dra. Janira Costa (J.M Costa, J. de Araújo Mascarenhas. 1998. Cátalogo do material-typo de Odonata (Insecta) do Museu Nacinal. Publições Avulsas do Museu Nacional, 76:22) has examined the type of Ophippus garbei Navás and confirms this suggested synonymy. In another brief publication (J.A. Costa, T.C. Santos. 1991. Redistribuição de algunas espéies do gênero Macrothemis para o gênero Gynothemis (Odonata: Libellulidae). XVIII Congresso Brasilein de Zoologie Salvador, Bahia: 215), these authors suggest the transfer of, M. capitata, Calvert; M. hosana, Santos; M. musiva, Calvert; M. pumila, Karsch; and M. tenuis, Hagen to Gynothemis. However, the paper cited above is an abstract and pending publication of results of this study, I have left these taxa in Macrothemis.

31. Libellula bifasciata Blanchard. The type for this old, forgotten name was discovered by Lieftinck to be L. semifasciata, not L. pulchella, according to Dr. M.J. Westfall, Jr. (pers. comm.). As with Triacanthagyna obscuripennis, I think it best to consider L bifasciata a nomen obletum.

32. P. Machet (in litt.) informs me that Macrothemis rochai is a probable synonym of M. inacuta.

33. P. Machet (in litt.), who has examined the types of Dythemis flavopunctata and Brechmorhoga flavoannulata, considers them synonyms. The species is presently considered a Brechmorhoga.

34. P. Machet (in litt.), believes Macrothemis valida Navás to be a Brechmorhoga.

Status of specific names not mentioned in the NWOL:

1. Cora semiopaca subfumata Förster, 1914. This name was applied to a single male which is now lost. The original description is too brief to determine the status of this name. I agree with Bick & Bick. (1990. Odonatologica 19(2):123) who consider the name a nomen dubium.

2. Enallagma optimolocus Miller & Ivae, 1995 (Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington 97(4):833-838). I reviewed an earlier draft of the manuscript, have one paratype in my collection and also examined a specimen supposedly of this species from Oregon (Crook County, South Fork Crooked River, nr. confluence with North Fork, 10 Aug. 1994, Ken J. Tennessen, collector). I strongly believe that this taxon is only a hybrid between E. anna and E. carunculatum for the following reasons: No females of E. optimolocus have been collected and this "species" has always been collected where the two parental types occur. Examination of two paratypes and the Oregon male, the last kindly loaned to me by Dr. Ken Tennessen, show appendage morphology intermediate between the parental types. Hybridization between other Enallagma species is known and hybrids intermediate in appendage morphology have been produced in the laboratory and occur in nature for two closely related species, Ischnura denticollis and I. gemina (Leong, J. M. & J. E. Hafernick, Jr. 1992. Hybridization between two damselfly species (Odonata: Coenagrionidae): morphometric and genitalic differentiation. Annals of the Entomological Society of America 85(6): 662-670).

3. kirkbyae Pierce 1965. [Sobobapteron]. This species was described (Pierce, W. D. 1965. Fossil arthropods of California 26. Three new fossil insect sites in California. Bulletin Southern California Academy of Sciences. 64(3):157-162) from a wingtip supposedly of Permian origin. According to a later paper by Carpenter (Carpenter, F. M. 1968. The affinities of the genus Sobobapteron Pierce. Bulletin Southern California Academy of Sciences. 67(4):263-264), the wing which appears to be of Pleistocene origin, is apparently that of an extant Enallagma species. Mrs. L. K. Gloyd in correspondence with Carpenter was "of the opinion that the fossil wing could very well have belonged to Enallagma clausum Morse, which now occurs in California…". It is presently impossible to associate this fossil with any extant species (if is does represent an extant species). I will continue to consider Sobobapteron as a synonym of Enallagma, but the status of the species kirkbyae will remain unclear until further evidence showing it to be a synonym of a recent species in Enallagma is forthcoming.

4. menetriesii (Selys, 1854) [Ophiogomphus?]. The status of this name was given by Garrison 1994 (Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 137 (2):173-269), who argued that the name should be considered a nomen dubium.

5. williamsoni Muttkowski, 1910. This name based on only one known specimen, is almost certainly a natural hybrid between Gomphus (Gomphus) graslinellus and Gomphus (Gomphus) lividus.

6. wabashensis Williamson, 1909. Until recently, consensus among most U. S. Odonatists was to treat Macromia wabashensis as a synonym or color form (polymorph) of M. taeniolata. Secondary genitalia including the shape of the head of the hamule for M. pacifica, M. wabashensis, and M. taeniolata is similar. Williamson (1909. Proc. U. S. Nat. Museum 37:369-398.) reports captures of M. wabashensis with Macromia taeniolata and M. pacifica, which suggests the possibility that M. wabashensis is a hybrid between M. pacifica and M. taeniolata. Other mostly non-published data suggest the occurrence of both M. pacifica and M. taeniolata wherever M. wabashensis has been collected. Like Dunkle (1995. Conservation of dragonflies (Odonata) and their habitats in North America. page 23 in Corbet, P. S., S. W. Dunkle, H. Ubukata, eds. Proceedings of the International symposium on the conservation of dragonflies and their habitats. Japanese Society for the Preservation of Birds, Kushiro, xii + 1-70), I am doubtful of according species status to M. wabashensis. Acquisition of more specimens and the discovery of the female may help to determine its true status. I suggest that multivariate morphometric analyses of available specimens of M. wabashensis and samples of M. taeniolata and M. pacifica from zones of sympatry with M. wabashensis may provide evidence about whether M. wabashensis is a hybrid.
