Videotape production need not be expensive, time consuming, or difficult. Here are a few tips to help you prepare a video that will allow us to evaluate you fairly:
Use a good quality new tape for copies, rather than recording over an old Seinfeld episode.
Make sure we know your uniform number, color(s), what you look like, and which position on the court you start in when we begin the tape. Include a brief guide if you think the segments might be confusing (for instance, if you are switching sides and in different color uniforms). If the uniform numbers are not CLEARLY visible, we'll need some help! Including a numbered team roster is also helpful.
Ideally, we would like to see both some practice video of you doing all the skills (including what happens TO the ball after you contact it), as well as some game play from several different games. Don't be concerned about editing too heavily. Try to avoid showing nothing but endless 5 second repeats of your perfect plays. Let us see the whole rally. If you pick several individual GAMES (or parts of games in which you played well), this should suffice. If possible, show both a sideline and endline camera view--but don't worry if you only have one or the other. Game video in which the camera is tightly focused on you is useless--we need to see what happens to the ball AFTER it leaves your control :-)
Your tape need not be long. 10-15 ball contacts is sufficient, EXCEPT for attacking for hitters, and setting for setters. We like to see attackers hit from left, middle and right, all set types/tempos. We like to see setters set all tempos, on and off the net, and with the camera both behind the setter, and facing the net from mid-court. Setters--PLEASE give us some tape of your blocking skills!
If you think you might be a good match for our school, we will be happy to review your tape and provide specific fedback about your skills and how you will fit into our style and level of play ... so consider this an open invitation to SEND YOUR TAPE to us :-)
