Mark Massey
Head Volleyball Coach
MASSEY joined the Logger staff for the 1996 season after seven
outstanding years leading the Cal State L.A. program. His CSLA
team was ranked in the TOP 5 nationally in NCAA Division II from
1992-95, with a 91-29 record (.758 winning percentage) and four
consecutive NCAA "Sweet 16" National Tournament appearances.
The squad garnered four consecutive 2nd place CCAA conference
finishes behind perennial NCAA Division II power CSU-Bakersfield,
and placed 4th in the 1992 National Championships.
Since arriving at Puget Sound, his volleyball squad has captured three
Northwest Conference titles and continued
to win at a .700+ clip, including a 5th place finish at NAIA
nationals in 1997, a #16 NAIA ranking in 1998 (despite competing
without athletic scholarships against scholarship teams), a
#4 NCAA-III ranking in 2000, and #11 in 2001. In all, Coach Massey
has produced eleven "Top 20" ranked teams in the past 16 years
Massey has produced nine All-American, 21 All-Region, and 33
All-Conference performers. He was recognized in 1992 as the
Asics/Volleyball Monthly NCAA Division II NATIONAL COACH OF
THE YEAR, was a two-time recipient of the AVCA Southwest Region
Coach of the Year award, and was CCAA Conference Co-Coach of the
Year. He was also selected as the NWC Conference Coach of the Year
in 1997 and 2000 after undefeated seasons, and chosen as the 2000
West Region Coach of the Year. He currently chairs the NWC
volleyball coaches, and is a voting member on the AVCA "Top 20"
poll.
Massey holds a B.S. degree from Furman University (Greenville, SC)
in Biology/Physical Education, a Master's degree from Ithaca College
(Ithaca, NY), and is at the ABD stage of a Doctorate in Education at
Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY), specializing in Sport Psychology.
He has worked with numerous national team athletes and high school and
college coaches designing mental training programs for peak
performance. Massey is also a noted speaker at coach education
workshops on high-speed offensive systems. He was a
featured speaker on "swing attack" at the 1999 NCAA Volleyball
National Convention held in conjunction with the Division I finals
in Hawaii. He conducted a "How to Teach the Swing Attack" drill
session at the 2001 AVCA National Convention in San Diego.
His outstanding collegiate coaching career includes Cal State
Los Angeles ('89-'95), Northeastern University (Boston, '84-'89),
Winthrop University (Rock Hill, SC, '83), Syracuse University (NY,
'80-'82), and Furman University (Greenville, SC, '76-'79.)
