Pirates Complete Title Run With 6-3 Win Over 'Cats

YAKIMA, Wash. - Completing a dream season that saw them go undefeated against Northwest Conference schools, the Whitworth Pirates won the NWC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Linfield Wildcats, 6-3, at the Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima, Wash.

In doubles play, the Pirates grinded out a pair of hard-fought victories in the numbers two and three position to take a slight lead into singles play. Linfield won their lone doubles match at the top as the team of Sallie Katter and Abby Olbrich defeated Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall, 8-4.

In singles play, the Pirates continued to hold back the seven-time defending champion Wildcats. Burns collected a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the number one singles position and Linh Aven held off Sophie Larson for a win at the third spot. Erica Bosman and Katie Staudinger won at the bottom of the lineup to clinch the title for the Bucs.

Whitworth now takes the NWC's automatic spot in the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. Linfield may be joining them as they look to be in the hunt for an at-large berth.
