Whitman Begins Title Defense With 5-1 Win

YAKIMA, Wash. - In their first match of the 2009 Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Championship, the Whitman Missionaries collected a shortened victory over the Willamette Bearcats, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima, Wash.

In doubles play, the Willamette team of Cody Ferguson and Matt Houser grinded out a 9-7 victory over Justin Hayashi and Dan Wilson. The Missionaries evened it out and retook the lead with a pair of victories to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

In singles play, Whitman took over, winning three matches to clinch the win. Wilson collected a 6-3, 6-4 win at the number two singles and Nadeem Kassam won, 6-3, 6-4, at the number three singles position.

Whitman will play Pacific Lutheran on Saturday for the NWC title beginning at Noon. Willamette will take on Linfield in the 3rd/4th place match on Saturday morning.
