SPOKANE, Wash. — Willamette University and Whitworth College are tied for the lead in the 2004-05 Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy standings after the fall sports season.
Willamette got to the top of the standings by sweeping the
NWC cross country men's and women's championships. The Bearcats also added
second place finishes in volleyball and football to account for most of
their 92 points.
Whitworth also scored 92 points after the Pirates finished
no lower than third place in any fall sport. Whitworth won its only fall
title in men's soccer and also finished second in women's soccer and women's
cross country.
The University of Puget Sound was third in the standings
with 84 points. The Loggers won the women's soccer title and finished
second in both men's soccer and men's cross country.
Pacific Lutheran University, the NWC champions in volleyball, scored 68 points for fourth place.
Linfield College, the 2003-04 final All-Sports Trophy winners, won the 2004 football title but still fell back to fifth in the overall standings with 54 points.
George Fox University was in sixth place with 50 points,
followed by Whitman College (32), Pacific University (28) and Lewis &
Clark College (26).
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952-72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College’s women’s athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
