NWC Women's GolfREDMOND, Ore. - A 10-stroke lead after the first day of play proved too much for anyone to overcome as the Whitworth University Pirates remained firmly in control and wound up winning the Northwest Conference Women's Golf Fall Classic by 14 strokes as the tournament came to a conclusion Sunday here at the Juniper Golf Course.

The Pirates shot a 357 on the second day and finished with a 36-hole total of 698. The Pacific University Boxers shot the best Sunday round with a 355 and climbed from fourth to second with a score of 712, edging the host George Fox University Bruins who shot a 713. The University of Puget Sound Loggers slipped from second to fourth with a 721, and they were followed by the Linfield College Wildcats at 730, the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes at 813, and the Willamette University Bearcats at 840. The Lewis & Clark College Pioneers had three players competing, but four are needed for a team score, and the Whitman College Missionaries did not play in the Fall Classic.

Results of the NWC Fall Classic count as one-quarter of the season score for determining the conference champion. Teams in the Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic receive one point each for each team they beat, and two points for each team they beat in April's NWC Championship event. As a result, the spring schedule will begin with Whitworth holding 8 points, Pacific 7, George Fox 6, Puget Sound 5, Linfield 4, Pacific Lutheran 3, Willamette 2, and Lewis & Clark and Whitman with 0 each.

Willamette's Whitney Ueno, the first-day leader, also maintained her lead and took medalist honors with a two-day score of 74-82=156. She thus earned automatic All-Northwest Conference status for the season. Valerie Kitamori of Pacific was the runner-up with an 85-80=165, nine strokes off the pace. Liz Martin of Whitworth took third place with an 84-85=169, Brynn Hurdus of Linfield was fourth with an 82-88=170, and Sarah McCown of George Fox was fifth at 82-89=171.

Other counting scores for the host Bruins included an 83-95=178 (tied for 9th) by Whitney Clues, a 92-90=182 (tied for 13th) by Brianna Nap, and a 96-86=182 (tied for 13th) by Mandy Cameron.

The Fall Classic is the final event for Northwest Conference teams until the spring season rolls around.
